Ravana comes upon King Marutta's sacrifice, where the terrified gods hide in animal forms
Full sarga summary
Ravana comes upon King Marutta's sacrifice, where the terrified gods hide in animal forms -- Indra as a peacock, Yama as a crow, Kubera as a lizard and Varuna as a swan -- restrained by the sage Samvarta from breaking his consecration, Marutta does not fight, and Ravana, proclaimed victor, devours the assembled sages and departs -- the gods resume their forms and bless the creatures whose shapes they had taken.
